Filing a tax return could be a challenge and especially in a country like India, where the population is 1.3 billion. Every Year many get arrested due to not filing the income tax return on time or hiding a hefty amount from the government. Filing a return on time could be beneficial for the applicant and the government. You must know how to file tax return step by step. The government gets their dues on time and the applicant doesn’t have to face any further inquiry or notice. Don’t forget there are some documents also required while filing a tax return so keep them ready. Documents like Bank account details, PAN number, Aadhar Card, the address of the house property, Form 16, Pay Slips etc. are required. Likewise, some other details are required as well if you have any mutual funds like details of mutual fund statement, sale and purchase of equity funds, debt funds etc. Always keep in mind that you should file the correct information because of the government always double check the information provided.

There are two steps of filing a tax return, one is to file by in person and second is to file online. In this age of Internet and Wi-Fi, almost every one of us are very active on social Media platforms. In this age company like PayTM are earning billions of profit only through their mobile app through which a person can pay their TV cable, water, electricity or phone bills. So, now you can file your income tax return through the internet also. Here are some ways:

The first step you have to login to E-filing application, now you have to go to E-file and submit ‘ITR Online’ then you have to select the income tax return form and the assessment year. Fill the details in the form and then click the submit button. After submission, an acknowledgment detail will be displayed.

There is a separate way to file your income tax return in-person also. You can collect the income tax return form from the income Tax office and fill it with attached documents and proofs and then you can post it to the Income Tax Office. Nowadays, many private companies are also giving income tax application forms to their employees whosoever wants to file a return In-Person.

Through these ways, you can file your Tax. And don’t forget that filing a return on time could be beneficial for you and the government both, whereas not filing a return on time could get you in trouble.

  1. Kindly widen the base of tax paying population by outsourcing.
Give incentive to the agencies providing data of the people not paying any tax at all to the department.
Broaden the tax base.Lot of Shopkeepers, electricians, plumbers, road side vendors are earning more than 5000 per day and not filing any returns.Rich farmers must be included.

Outsource input data.Pay the agency once data is converted into inclusion to the tax base.
Till now only those are being screened who are paying already.
Focus on those not paying at all.

  2. What Bimal Roy Narang said is 100% true. Please form such a machinary to collect from the Business and unorganised sectors. Several business persons are not giving correct invoice bills. They give either “Estimation chalans or Delivery chalans”. They are also REFUSING to take credit Cards. This should be stopped. Then you can get correct information.
Agriculture income beyond certain limits can also be taxed, and there by Rich Agriculturalists can be brought into tax zones.
pl. do not over load on persons who are already paying. Try to get new persons and compenies into Tax zones. I am paying tax since 1965 for my little pay up to and until I am on my death bed.

    • I do agree with Bimal Roy and Narayanamurthy. We can also include Hindu priests who are doing service in temples as well as in family functions and ceremonies, they are all amassing wealth buying so many flats, houses and lands. There are so many private contractors who offer various services and get paid in cash. There are kirana dhukans, miscellaneous shops who do lot of cash transactions and go unnoticed. There are so many service providers who take service charges in cash without authoriised receipts. The government shoul start various agency networks to monitor all these defaulters. Agriculturalists who own vast lands and pay the poor farmers meager amount and get maximum income and hide their income. Farmer definition has to change. Only those who work in the field and those who own reasonable agricultural land have to be considered as farmers and not all mirasdars.

  3. ok; theoretically fine; but give us some at least hypothetical example about filing returns online for the year 2017-18;

    • It is true that the accountable law abiding honest tax payers are kept under scan by IT authorities with levying surcharges under various categories for the higher income tax payers.Unfortunate that millions tax evading citizens are touched occasionally as the tip of an ice berg.
The central board of direct taxes and the central government should bring out sea changes to bring every income in to tax net
may be around 1 percent of income of every citizen and abolish the present syatem of IT.And make stringent laws for taking care of tax evaders.
Or else it is only the honest tax abiding citizen kept under pressure whereas the billioneers try to avoid tax payments under the guise of so many lawful exemptions permitted and majority of the citizen go untouched by IT rules and regulations.
After all the country has to be administered by the moneys received through taxes paid by the citizen of the country.

  8. One should be more vigilant about the filing of on line income tax return . it is a mechanical
as well as technical nature of work as one has to do the same thing again and again.

once, one is gain over the knowledge of it , nobody can stop and the person will be excel in
this field which is both beneficial for the Assesses as well as for the Govt.

    Thanks & Regards,

My friend has an outstanding income tax demand of Rs.6170 for the A.Y. 2013-14. My question is that how long the tax dept. may send notice to him for the same?

    • Arrears for ten years TDS is as shown by you. Provided you are able to show that in each year your gross income is not taxable then you can seek a refund. 149 (1) provides exemption provided your income each year had never crossed the limit. Tax notice has to be honoured witha prompt reply if you sre lacking response for more than four years you may even be summoned to ITO
