The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday has given a big update regarding the Rs 2000 note. RBI said that about 97.26 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banking system, while such notes worth Rs 9,760 crore are still available with the public. Let us tell you that on May 19, RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination bank notes from circulation.

According to a statement issued by the Reserve Bank, the total value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation at the close of business on May 19, 2023 was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. On November 30, 2023, it reduced to Rs 9,760 crore. According to RBI, in this way, more than 97.26 percent of the total Rs 2,000 notes in circulation till May 19, 2023 have now been returned. The statement said that Rs 2,000 bank notes will remain legal tender.

People can deposit or exchange Rs 2,000 bank notes at 19 RBI offices across the country. People can send their Rs 2,000 notes to the designated regional offices of the Reserve Bank through insured post to get their Rs 2,000 notes deposited directly into their bank accounts. Earlier the deadline for exchanging these notes or depositing them in bank accounts was 30 September. Later this deadline was extended till October 7.

Both deposit and exchange services in bank branches were stopped on October 7. After this, from October 8, people were given the option to exchange and deposit notes in 19 offices of RBI.

Meanwhile, queues are being seen at RBI offices during working hours to exchange/deposit the Rs 2,000 note. These 19 offices of RBI are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
