RBI 2000 Rupees Update: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Friday that about Rs 9,760 crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes are still with the public. However, the last date for exchanging currency has ended in October. RBI said that about 97.26 percent of the Rs 2,000 bank notes have returned to the banking system.
RBI said, ‘The total value of Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 bank notes was announced. It will come down to Rs 9,760 crore at the close of business on November 30, 2023.
On May 19, RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination bank notes from circulation. The Rs 2,000 bank note was introduced in November 2016 after the demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 bank notes.

However, keep in mind that Rs 2,000 bank notes will remain legal tender. People can deposit and/or exchange Rs 2,000 bank notes at 19 RBI offices across the country. People can send Rs 2,000 bank notes through Indian Post from any post office to any issuing office of RBI for credit in their bank accounts in India.
The public and institutions holding such notes were initially asked to exchange them or deposit them in bank accounts by September 30. Later the deadline was extended till October 7. Both deposit and exchange services in bank branches were stopped on 7 October.
From October 8, individuals have been provided the option to exchange currency at 19 RBI offices or deposit the equivalent amount in their bank accounts.
