Govt mandates AC cabins for truck drivers in landmark auto sector decision: Report

In a significant development for the automotive industry, the Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a notification mandating all N2 and N3 category (commercial) trucks produced from October 1, 2025, to be equipped with factory-fitted air-conditioned cabins for drivers, as revealed by ET Now.

This directive imposes additional financial burdens on truck manufacturers such as Tata, Ashok Leyland, and Mahindra.

“The performance testing of the cabin fitted with air-conditioning system shall be as per IS 14618: 2022, as amended from time to time,” the MoRTH notification dated July 10, mentioned.

MoRTH had invited input from stakeholders within 30 days of the notification date.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the draft notification on July 6, proposing the compulsory inclusion of air conditioning systems in approved truck cabins.
