Monsoon plays a vital role in the Indian economy. More than 50 percent of India’s agricultural land has no other source of irrigation. Monsoon rain is also important for recharging reservoirs.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday gave a major update regarding the country’s weather. In its forecast, the Meteorological Department said that the average rainfall in the whole country is likely to be less than normal in June.
Where the rain is less and where it is more:
In June, the southern states and the Northeast are likely to receive more than normal rainfall, while the northern and central states, which are facing the heat, are likely to receive less than normal rainfall.
What has been the situation so far
IMD said that in the month of June 2024 (till June 18), the entire country received 64.5 mm of rainfall, which was 20 percent less than the long period average (LPA) of 80.6 mm. According to a statement from the IMD, during this month, 11 sub-divisions received above normal rainfall and 25 received much less than normal rainfall.
What is the reason?
Meteorologists say that the progress of the country’s monsoon has slowed down. Due to this, there is a possibility of less rain in June.
Monsoon first came early, then slowed down
This year, monsoon started two days before the normal date in Kerala and 6 days before in Northeast India. After this, the speed of monsoon remained slow in the north direction.
What is the current situation?
By June 12, the monsoon covered Kerala, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Goa and Telangana, most parts of southern Maharashtra and some parts of southern Chhattisgarh, southern Odisha, most parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and the entire northeastern states.
However, the monsoon did not advance further after that and on June 18, the monsoon northern boundary passed through Navsari, Jalgaon, Amravati, Chandrapur, Bijapur, Sukma, Malkangiri, Vijayanagaram.
