Why was Assam’s airport closed
Tezpur Airport of Assam has been closed from October 1, 2024 to March 31, 2026. Flight services will remain closed for the next one and a half years from October. On the instructions of the Airport Authority, the movement of passenger planes has been stopped here for 18 months. Actually, the airport will be closed for one and a half years due to maintenance work. The airport will remain closed due to improving facilities at the terminal and reconstruction of the runway.

Flight services at Tezpur airport in Assam will be closed for one and a half years from October for maintenance work. Tezpur Airport Director G Shiva Kumar said that passenger flights will be closed from October 1, 2024 to March 31, 2026. He said that this is being done for the reconstruction of the runway and other projects with the aim of improving the facilities at the terminal.
Tezpur airport is near the ‘Tezpur Base’ of the Indian Air Force and its runway is used for both commercial and fighter aircraft. Tezpur Air Force Base had already informed the Tezpur Salonibari Passenger Airport Authority about the maintenance work, due to which passenger aircraft services will be temporarily stopped.
Planning to start helicopter services
Kumar said that during this time the authority is considering providing helicopter service from Tezpur to Guwahati, but it is yet to be finalized. Currently, a 90-seater SpiceJet flight operates a daily direct flight from Tezpur to Kolkata. Besides, two airlines operate daily flights to Kolkata via Guwahati, Pasighat and Tezpur.
