The government had started FasTag to get rid of the time and long queues at highway tolls. But now it has been made even easier by introducing a new Global Navigation Satellite System. Through the new GNSS system, you do not need to stop at any toll tax, but your Toll Tax will be deducted automatically through satellite. For this, trials have also been done on 4 highways. Not only this, a major change has also been made in the rules set earlier, due to which now no toll will have to be paid for 20 kilometers. Let us understand in detail what is this satellite system, what you have to do for this and how will it work?
This discount will be available with automatic toll deduction
First of all, let’s talk about the relief given under the GNSS system, that is, exemption in Toll Tax up to 20 km, so let us tell you that earlier tax was collected through cash or fastag at every toll plaza. Apart from this, there was a hassle of stopping at toll plazas everywhere, which will end with the new satellite system GNSS. Under the new change, the Global Navigation Satellite System will automatically provide exemption for travel up to 20 km per day, toll tax will be charged only for travel beyond this limit. This change will also inspire people to adopt this new technology.
It has been told in the notification that if a person travels by highway, expressway, tunnel or bridge, then travel up to 20km will be free. But if you travel more than 20km, then toll will be collected according to the distance traveled. That is, toll will be charged for the entire distance.
Double toll tax on vehicles without GPS
If we look at the notification issued by the government, then toll deduction can start soon from this new Global Navigation Satellite System. Along with giving discounts, this system is going to replace the old FASTag system and manual processes with modern technologies. There is a plan to build a separate lane on highways and expressways for toll collection from Global Navigation Satellite System. According to the notification, another rule in this is that if vehicles without GPS come in this lane, then double toll tax will be collected from them.
How will this GNSS system work?
This new satellite system of the government will be based on GPS. Toll tax will be collected from satellite with the help of GPS. It will use on-board units (OBU) installed in vehicles to track their movement. There will be a special lane for vehicles with GNSSOBU, in which there will be no movement of other vehicles. As of now, the GNSS tolling system is only for commercial vehicles, later private vehicles are also expected to be included in it.
The satellite system will first find out the distance of your vehicle from GPS.
Then it will deduct the toll by recognizing your number plate, fastag or any other thing.
After the automatic toll deduction, the driver will be informed about it through SMS.
If the distance covered is more than 20KM, the vehicle owner will be charged for the total distance.
How can you use it in your car?
For vehicle owners, especially commercial vehicles, using GNSS will involve installing an OBU in their car. This device will connect with the satellite and track the vehicle’s journey and automatically calculate the toll. This calculation of Toll Tax will be based on the distance traveled on the highway. The driver will have to ensure that there is enough money in his account for toll deduction.

How different is GNSS from FasTag
Fastag service was started with the aim of reducing the time spent at the toll plaza and now GNSS is an updated step in this direction. The new (Satellite based toll system) is faster than Fastag. That is, the FasTag system currently implemented at toll plazas for tax collection works on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, which automatically collect toll. But the GNSS based tolling system will have virtual tolls. That is, it will not be visible where the toll is and neither will you have to stop at them.
It is worth noting that this facility will initially cover only 2,000 kilometers by April-June 2025, after which the GNSS system will be gradually expanded. Therefore, it is believed that even though the immediate benefits of this system are limited, it may prove to be better in the long term.
