Ayushman Bharat Scheme: Senior citizens aged 70 years or above can apply for health card, know the process

Under Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance (AB PMJAY), a family gets health cover of up to Rs 5 lakh. This means that the insurance company covers the cost of treatment of a family member up to Rs 5 lakh under this scheme.

Top-up cover for those already covered under the scheme

Seniors aged 70 years and above who are already covered under Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance will get an additional top-up cover of Rs 5 lakh annually. This will prevent them from spending money from their pocket even if the treatment cost is more than Rs 5 lakh. However, those senior citizens who are already covered under any such government scheme will either have to continue their existing scheme or they can avail the new Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance. This means that they will get the benefit of either of the two schemes. About 4.5 crore families are expected to get the benefit of this scheme. Under this, about 6 crore senior citizens will be able to get free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a Diwali gift to senior citizens. On October 29, he launched the Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance Scheme for people aged 70 years and above. Now every elderly person aged 70 years and above will get the benefit of this scheme. BJP had promised to bring all the elderly under the purview of this scheme in the Lok Sabha elections. Earlier, only the elderly below the poverty line used to get the benefit of this scheme.
