According to a recent report by McAfee, India is the number one country in terms of downloading fake apps. In the last few months, many people have unknowingly downloaded apps that promise quick loans but are actually scams. These fake loan apps can steal your personal details and bank details, putting you at risk of major fraud. McAfee has identified 15 specific fake loan apps that have been downloaded by millions of people – a total of about 8 million (80 lakh) users. The report says that it has been downloaded mostly from Google Play Store.
Although some of these apps have been removed from the store, they are still present on many users’ phones, and it is important to understand the threats they pose.
Why are these apps dangerous?
These fake loan apps often ask for a variety of permissions when installed, such as access to your calls, messages, camera, microphone, and location. Many people eager to get a loan give these permissions without understanding the consequences. Once they get access, these apps can easily steal your sensitive data, including one-time passwords required for banking.
Moreover, these apps are designed so cleverly that they even bypass Google’s security and this is why many apps still appear on the Google Play Store despite being harmful. Users have also reported threats from hackers who tamper with their personal photos through these apps.
If you suspect that you have one of the 15 fake loan apps mentioned below on your phone, delete them immediately to protect yourself from fraud. See the list of fake loan apps below…
