The reasons to adhere to feature phones are as varied as its user base, but it includes preference for simplicity and longer battery life at lower cost.
Head of the industry intelligence group at CMR (Cyber Media Research), Prabhu Ram mentioned that, “JioPhone is the key factor behind the surge of feature phones that saw its shipments grow in end-2017 more than five-fold, surpassing Samsung at the top. Another key factor is KaiOS, which has infused smart features in a basic feature phone”. He added, “It is logical to cash in on this wave for feature phones while it lasts, for an e-commerce platform like Amazon.”
In India the feature phone market saw a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 62% in 2017 as per CMR, while in the quarter that ended in December 2017; 4G feature phones grew by a massive 546%. The market for feature phones is not only being driven by rural India but also by consumers in tier-1 cities, who are using it as companion phones.
Associate research director at IDC (International Data Corporation) India, Navkendar Singh said that, “Move by Amazon can be seen as an attempt or an experiment to gauge the demand from this segment for online purchase. Through this Amazon feature phone sale, the brand can learn what works, and how can the demand be generated. Once this segment’s demand is unlocked, the upside is huge due to high volumes which come with this segment.”
