Compared to last year i.e. FY 2019-20, this year, less number of taxpayers have filed their ITR in the financial year 2020-21.
It remains to be seen whether the newly launched e- Income Tax Filing Portal can handle the load of multiple individuals filing ITR simultaneously in such a short span of time.
The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for the financial year 2020-21 is December 31, 2021. This deadline has already been extended twice – first from the normal deadline of July 31 to September 30, 2021 and then till December 31, 2021 at the present time. However, chartered accountants and tax experts are of the view that the deadline for individuals to file ITR may be extended.
More than 3.59 crore Income Tax Returns filed on new e-filing portal of Income Tax Dept till 15th December, 2021. More than 6 lakh ITRs being filed per day & increasing daily.

Till now, only three and a half crore have filed ITR
, compared to last year i.e. FY 2019-20, less number of taxpayers have filed their ITR in the financial year 2020-21 this year. According to a tweet from the official Twitter handle of the Income Tax Department on January 11, 2021, more than 5.95 crore ITRs were filed for FY 2019-20 (January 10, 2021 is the deadline for filing ITR for FY 2019-20).
was the last date). However, as of December 15, 2021, more than 3.59 crore ITRs have been filed. Thus, 2.36 crore ITRs are yet to be filed and less than 15 days are left for the December 31, 2021 deadline to expire.
Consistent with our endeavour to keep all stakeholders continuously informed about daily figures of ITRs filed over the past few days,we gratefully acknowledge the efforts of our taxpayers &tax professionals &are happy to share the data of ITRs filed for AY2020-21 upto 10.01.2021 pic.twitter.com/fYtcJrsvDx

Will the new portal be able to handle the burden of over two crore taxpayers With
less than 15 days to go, it may not be possible for the remaining individuals to file their tax returns, as the newly launched income tax portal is still being reported to have multiple errors. Huh. It remains to be seen whether the newly launched e-filing income tax portal can handle the load of multiple individuals filing ITR simultaneously in such a short span of time.
Last date can be extended
Also, last year also, the government had extended the last date for filing ITR thrice – first from July 31 to November 30, then till December 31 and finally again for the financial year 2019-20. from January 10, 2021.
The extension happened when the old tax filing portal was being used and neither was the fear of newer Covid-19 variants at that time. For the above reasons, the government may consider extending the ITR filing deadline to the present deadline of December 31, 2021.
