Retirement age may be increased to 65 years!

Amidst the government’s decision to increase the age limit for the appointment of assistant professors, the teachers’ organizations, including the Left alliance, have supported each other in demanding an increase in the retirement age of university college teachers in the state. However, with the teaching community raising the retirement age to 65, youth organizations may soon protest against it.

Demand for retirement age as per UGC rules

Earlier, the work of increasing the age limit for assistant professors to 50 years for teacher appointment was done by the Kerala government. On the other hand, the demand for increasing the retirement age for assistant professors has been started by the teaching community as per the political point of view. After this decision, the retirement age has been demanded as per the UGC rules.

Demand to implement uniform retirement age

Apart from demanding steps to increase the retirement age, Jogi Alex, president of the All India Private College Teachers Association, says that a uniform retirement age should be implemented in colleges and universities. Service conditions in the higher education sector will remove inequality.

Currently this is the rule

At present, the college teachers who joined the service before the introduction of Contributory Pension Scheme in April 2013 are retiring at the age of 56 years while for others the retirement age has been kept at 60 years. Along with this, the teaching community says that by increasing the retirement age of professors, more students will be able to do research. As per the norms of UGC, teachers are debarred from guiding research scholars 3 years before retirement under the rule. A college teacher who is covered under the statutory pension scheme can accept the guidance of PhD scholars only till the age of 52 years.

The commission had recommended

Earlier, for the improvement of higher education, Shyam B. Menon, the pay scale of university and college teachers in Kerala was recommended by the commission to be at par with the central university in terms of service, rules and retirement age. In which it was said that the retirement age of the employees should be increased to 65 years.

Along with this the commission had said that the state would be helped in attracting distinguished teachers and researchers from outside Kerala to the university and given by the staff. The government can take important decisions.
