Senior Citizens Facilities: In India, senior citizens i.e. elders are called the roof of the house. Along with the society, the government also takes care of them. Railways is also not behind in this. Now know what facilities Indian Railways provides to senior citizens.
According to railway rules, 60 year old male and 58 year old female citizen are considered as senior citizens. Earlier, Railways used to give them concession in fares of every class. This discount was also available in trains like Duronto, Shatabdi, Rajdhani. This concession was 50% for female citizens and 40% for male citizens. However, this exemption was discontinued by the government during the Corona epidemic. No information has been revealed about when the exemption will be given to senior citizens again.
There are two types of coaches in Indian Railways. The first is reserved and the second is non-reserved. Whenever a senior citizen makes a ticket booking in the Railways, he is given a lower berth on the basis of priority. Not only this, if the age of a woman is more than 45 years, then the computer system of the railway automatically gives her a lower berth. But this priority is given only on the basis of availability.
Seats are reserved for senior citizens
In railway trains in which coaches are reserved, some seats ie berths are kept reserved for senior citizens. About 6 lower berths are reserved for senior citizens in every sleeper coach. Women above 45 years of age and pregnant women are also accommodated on these seats only. There are more seats for senior citizens in Rajdhani, Duronto and Full AC trains as compared to normal mail and express trains.
Apart from this, some seats are also kept for senior citizens in Mumbai local trains. Senior women citizens are also accommodated in this. Talking about facilities, senior citizens are given wheel chairs at major stations.
