RBI Says: On May 19, RBI had decided to withdraw Rs 2000 notes. Even after five and a half months, notes worth Rs 10,000 crore are yet to be returned.
2000 Rupee Note: RBI has informed that by October 31, 2023, 97 percent of 2000 rupee notes have returned to the banking system. RBI said that the facility to deposit or exchange Rs 2,000 notes is available at 19 of its offices. The Central Bank has told the common people that they can deposit Rs 2000 notes through post offices. By availing this facility, there will be no need to travel to RBI office for depositing or exchanging notes.
RBI issued a statement saying that on May 19, 2023, the day the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes was announced, Rs 3.56 lakh crore of Rs 2000 notes were in circulation. Which has now reduced to only Rs 0.10 lakh crore or Rs 10,000 crore on October 31, 2023. RBI said that 97 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes issued on May 19, 2023 have now been returned.
Earlier, there was a facility to deposit or exchange Rs 2000 notes in banks till 20 September 2023, which was extended by RBI till 7 October. The facility to deposit or exchange Rs 2,000 notes has been made available in the regional offices of RBI from October 9, 2023. Apart from this, citizens can also send Rs 2,000 notes through postal service to RBI for deposit. For which RBI has also released the application format.
RBI has once again made it clear that the Rs 2,000 banknote will remain league tender. It is noteworthy that on May 19, 2023, RBI had announced to withdraw the Rs 2,000 note. While making the announcement, RBI had said that under the Clean Note Policy, RBI has decided to withdraw Rs 2000 notes from circulation. Even if Rs 2000 is no longer in circulation, Rs 2000 notes will remain legally valid.
