While announcing the interim order, the five-judge Constitution bench of Supreme Court which was headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra stated that the deadline of February 6 for linking Aadhaar card with mobile services also stands extended up to March 31.

The bench, which also included Justices A K Sikri, D Y Chandrachud, A M Khanwilkar and Ashok Bhushan, said that for the purpose of opening new bank accounts, an applicant will not be required to provide Aadhaar card number to the bank.

However, the applicant will have to produce the proof to the bank that he/she has applied for the Aadhaar number, said Justice Chandrachud, who wrote the unanimous interim order.

Deadline of March 31 will also be applicable to schemes by States. The interim order would be subject to the final outcome of the batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act on the grounds of it violating the fundamental right to privacy.

The next hearing on this would take place on January 17, 2018.

The Centre had on Wednesday extended the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar card and PAN for all bank accounts and certain financial transactions by three months till March 31, 2018.

The government had made quoting of the 12-digit Aadhaar number compulsory for old and new bank accounts as well as for any financial transaction of Rs 50,000 and more.

The previous deadline for linking Aadhaar number with different services was December 31, 2017.

  1. 19- 12- 2017 Quoting adhar no. for all business and even personal accounts of persons is good as it does not give room for growth of black money and helps growth of common honest people in the country. We have seen growth of corruption mainly by business men and politicians. In fact though politicians job is service sacrifice and honesty and make citizens honest and hard working for the growth and prosperity of the country, they are actually suffering due to growth of black money by politicians and businessmen. This is my humble view being a senior citizen who participated during freedom struggle shouting ” SERVICE, SACRIFICE, PATRIOTISM” during freedo. B S Ganesh

  2. That name of an applicant may be written in different order in different accounts. When we link AADHAAR with different accounts showing the name in different orders and form, there should not be a problem in linking. Suitable guidelines and / or instructions may be issued by the competent authority.

  3. I had applied and obtained my Aadhaar card when UIDAI had introduced it. My name with initials was accepted by UIDAI & accordingly I received my Aadhar card too. My PAN card, which I had obtained more than a decade ago, has the full name as required by the IT Dept.
Now I am required to link my Aadhaar card to PAN card which I tried to do so this morning. But I understand that even if there is a minor difference in the name the system will not accept it.

Now kindly suggest what can I do for linking Aadhar, PAN card, bank account, Ration card and etc…

  4. The compulsion of aadhar should not be necessary for old customers banks who are continuously operating their accounts since more than 10 years.

  5. Why SC deliberately should allow the Domicile’s Sword dangling above the head of every individual ? Aadhar exposition is much more cruesome than the sword. Why the judges allow time till March 31, 2018. To pacify the government or to do under-table business?

  6. If the adhar is made compulsory ,what will happen to the bed ridden patients.Though there is a provision for doorstep service for enrolling for adhar but practically no one cares at the local adhar office.
