new Delhi. A major decision has been taken for sugarcane farmers in a cabinet meeting held on Wednesday morning under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While giving relief to the farmers, the Modi government has taken a big decision. The Central Government (Government of India) has increased the FRP of sugarcane to Rs 10 per quintal. Let us tell you that the purchase price of sugarcane is declared as Fair & Remunerative Price (FRP). Sugar year starts every year from 1 October and runs till 30 September next year. Last year, the farmers protested against the increase in the purchase price. FRP is the price at which sugar mills buy sugarcane from farmers.

About 20 thousand crores of sugarcane farmers are owed to sugar mills. In such a situation, it would be very difficult to say how much benefit farmers will get from increasing FRP.

Good news for farmers:  After this decision of the Modi government, the cane purchase price has been increased to Rs 285 per quintal. Earlier, there was no change in the purchase price in 2019-20 compared to 2018-19.

Let us tell you that apart from FRP, the state government also decides the price of sugarcane for the farmers on their own behalf. This is called SAP (state advisory price). For the last year 2019-20, the Uttar Pradesh government had fixed the State Advised Price (SAP) of sugarcane up to Rs 325 per quintal. Sugarcane price was set at Rs 325 for agati species, 315 for general species and Rs 310 for unsuitable species.  (Laxman Roy, Economic Policy Editor-CNBC Awaaz)
