DGCA gave information

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the apex regulator of airline companies in the country, has said in its order, ‘The airline will not refuse to allow any passenger to fly on the ground of disability. If an airline feels that the health of the passenger may deteriorate during the flight, then the said passenger will have to be examined by a doctor. After this the doctor will clearly give information about the medical condition of the passenger. The doctor will tell whether the passenger is fit to fly or not. The airline companies can take a decision only after consulting the doctor.

Why was the decision taken?

Significantly, this step has come after the Ranchi airport incident where IndiGo refused to let a differently-abled child board the plane, after which there was a protest against this incident. Showing strictness on this action of Indigo, DGCA also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh.

Indigo in its clarification had said that in view of the safety of the passengers, a disabled child was not allowed to board the Ranchi-Hyderabad flight on May 7. Actually that child was very much because he looked nervous. After this, showing strictness on Indigo, DGCA imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh saying that the behavior of Indigo employees was wrong and it worsened the situation.

What was the matter?

Significantly, on May 7, a handicapped child was stopped from boarding by the airline’s ground staff, after which there was a lot of outrage. The incident was being criticized all around, after which the Civil Aviation Authority took cognizance of it and started its investigation. During the investigation, Manisha Gupta, a passenger of Ranchi-Hyderabad flight, kept the child and his parents in front of the people about the trouble caused by the ground staff, then the truth of the incident came to light.
