Facial Recognition for Aadhaar: Another Layer of Security

In today’s world of data security and in order to provide better and stronger layer of security to the citizens authenticating their identity using Aadhaar, the UIDA, Unique Identification Authority of India, has welcomingly introduced facial authentication feature along with other features like fingerprints and iris recognition. This security feature will be used in conjugation with existing means of authentication like fingerprints, iris recognition or OTP (one-time-password). Planned to be implemented by July of this year i.e. 2018, this added security feature of facial recognition is expected to enhance the security of confidential information of the millions of citizens.

In a press notification released by UIDAI on Monday, UIDAI informed that at the time of enrolment of Aadhaar the photo of the applicant is also captured. To provide a thorough authentication, this photo can be leveraged efficiently to verify the identification of a Aadhaar Card number holder. This face authentication will be provided as an “additional choice” for those casesfacing difficulty with their fingerprints/iris recognition at the time of authentication. As this face photo is already available with UIDA1 maintained database there is no need to capture any kind of new data. And since Camera is now extensively available on various laptops and mobile phones, this facial recognitionwill easily be feasible for any authentication agencies without requiring any additional hardware.

This basically means that you need not go to an authorised Aadhaar centre again for further authentication of facial recognition details. The UIDAI will simply be tapping into its saved database for activating this feature. Additionally, this will also work with bio-metric device providers integrating face modality into certified registered devices by UIDAI and also providing standalone registered device service.

To enhance the security of information UIDAI has already added extra firewall with virtual IDs and limited KYC (Know Your Customer). Also as an additional security layer UIDAI has already placed a ‘bio-metric lock’ protecting against any external intrusions or breaches.

    • In the starting when Aadhar card were introduced, there was only Year of birth used to appear on Aadhar card. It does not mean that full DOB is not on the record. Once you get it printed after downloading the exact DOB will appear.

    • You need to correct the date of birth option …Give details of your date of birth and next time you will be given Full Date of Birth..

    • Go to any Aadhaar Centre near u and bring with your PAN card and address proof. They will change as per your request.

      Very easy.

    • Pl. Go to the nearest Aadhar centre and provide the proof of new address, it will be done and in maximum one week period your request will be completed.

    • VISIT TO YOUR NEAREST ENROLLMENT CENTRE OR GOVT RECOGNITION AGENTS AND PUT ADDRESS IN CARRD. BUT DO NOT GORGET TO TAKE SOME PROOF OF ADDRESS LIKE VOTER ID, DRIVING LICENSE, BANK PASSBOOK WITH PHOTO, GAS BOOK WITH PHOTO, ELECTRICITY BILL ETC.

  1. The total data need to be managed more effectively. For example linking PAN with AADHAR has been made compulsory, then why any bank account which was opened with PAN need to be linked with AADHAR again. Only in case where account is linked with PAN linking with AADHAR should be needed.

  2. What next after facial recognition? UIDAI must be dissolved with immediate effect. UIDAI and the govt. of India must be tried for impeachment for telling blatant lies to the nation that The data is fully secured. The fact is the bjp govt. in the garb of UIDAI is hell bent on slaving the every citizen of India.

    • SIRJI
YOU ARE UNNECESSARY BLAMING bjp which is the only govt.taking right step. Please see other part of world which is advanced.BJP has real concern for nation.

    • I can’t understand, what will be the security lapses, they are talking about. Show me any example of lapses which a common man can possibly suffer. It is on otherside more secure. What can anyone do with your finger prints and pictures of Irish?I can not understand why such people who are objecting to it ,use their own finger prints in sale of property during registration, passport office for more precisely obtaining passport. These people and more precisely politicians who are objecting to it don’t feel in giving their fingerprints and images of irish for obtaining visas to visit foreign countries. It seems the same people do not hv problem with divulging to other nation but hv problem in giving it to our nation for national interest.

    • Intelligent hackers shall outsmart/oversmart UIDAI…. ;;; Nothing is perfect , so any time any thing can happen in India;;; data leak, theft, piracy .Simple waste of time…..

  3. Is there a deadline for linking Aadhar to mobile (for online modification of Aadhar card and not for identity purpose ) . I have already linked mobile number to Aadhar card by going at the Vodafone centre. But have not got my phone linked to aadhar card at the Aadhar centre , for which I want to know if any deadline exists

  4. I have updated my records & my son Mr. Vineet Kumar records in Aadhar on 19/09/2017. but we have not received the Aadhar cards till date..

  5. There are some govt. banks like UBI where for linking of AAADHAR, customers need to stand in Que for finger print. The problem is two fold. First, under normal circumstances these banks discourage people to visit them and so this added workload invites rude and unfriendly behavior from employees. Therefore before enforcing this connectivity mandatory, Govt. should have made sure that proper machinery is in place. Second problem is, these banks have the facility of only fingerprint recognition and not iris. So people like me whose fingerprint does not come, what they will do? Same problem is being faced for mobile linking also. Since facial recognition is getting implemented from July 2018, Govt. should think of extending the last date of linking of AADHAR till end of this year.In Govt. banks, the rule for linking should be like Private banks where physical presence is not required.

    • UBI ONLINE AADHAR LINKING PORTAL IS THERE. U CAN SKE THE BANK PEOPLE THEY WILL PROVIDE YOU OR U CAN VIIT THE ATM COUNTERS AND THERE IS A OPTION OF AADHAAR LINKING WHERE U CAN INCLUDE AADHAAR NUMBER.

  6. For linking Aadhar once with mobile then with bank account it is not only harassment but also wastage of time because nothing can be done in one day even after waiting in a long que. One day there was no link other day machine can’t read biometry. First waited for long time for getting. Aadhar and now this harassment…………..

  7. The Aadhar Card already has owners photo. so can you please explain what you mean? Or is this mail received by me also a fraud sent by some hacker?

  8. Dear Sir,

If I change my Adhaar name from Jayesh Dilip Mehta to Jayesh Mehta, do I have to relink my adhaar with PAN / Bank / SIM etc.
The neet to change is because my PAN name is Jayesh Mehta.
    Regards
    Jayesh Mehta

  9. People over 80 like me have finger prints disappeared.Could not link mobiles to Aadhar.Already photo is there in Aadhar.. How do I get my mobile phones working after the deadline date? It is atrocious.

  10. Trust next only, one security level is left. Testing the DNA! Next all will be scrapped and we will be asked to go for ration card or Driving License. There is a limit for torturing the public, in order to save the face of one person. This can of course solve the problem of creating jobs for millions by opening labs for this purpose. Ultimately it has still not reached the level of the poor people who certainly will be benefited. where it has reached those are being tortured saying , figer print not ok, iris not ok ,name spelling not ok and so on. Will the authorities will really, honestly help this lot first. But for the malpractice of persons who are handling the security details there would not have been such a hesitancy from public.Even now if it made voluntary people will automatically join the schemes when they really see benefits. First punish, Blacklist those indulge in leaking aadhaar detail .

    • I am continuously facing difficulty of Aadhar authentication due to aging (73) my my fingerprints do not come on the device used by the different agencies for matching and result is authentication failure .If the facial Identification is implemented effectively by UIDA it will be a big relief for senior citizen like me. i wish all the best for the venture

  11. Sir,
I am a senior citizen and every year I face problem of aadhar authentication at SBI as my finger prints do not match. Then I am sent to PF office to get my authentication by facial method. Surprisingly my finger prints were matching when I applied for Jio simcard. This shows that , poor quality of machines are used by SBI. Formerly we used to personally appear before the SBI officer with original documents like PAN & Aadhar. The experience of aadhar authentification has been horrible. You are aware that the face also undergoes changes in 5 years. I hope, I dont have to go to Aadhar centre to get fresh card. Please reply. Thanks.

  12. Stil i am unable to understand how i wil change my photo taken at the time of making of aadhar card.
Because in xerox photo is not appering . becuasue photo was taken in closed shcool with poor light.
Give the solution for changing the photo on Aadhar card.

  13. I am a senior citizen . Gettingpension @₹1437 PM through EPS-95 The organisation needs Digital Life Certificate . SBI, Crossing Republk -branch ,Ghazibad -201016 isn’t providing such facility . However, I visited Regional Office ( EPFO) , NOIDA for the same . Yet , successful . May it obtain digitally – self by – AADHAR and registered mobile ??

  14. its good idea for facial capture or authentication however facial identity is changing when increasing time.
Also your good approach about everybody having mobile phone & laptop for facial recognition still its having loopholes to anybody can access through pictures/photos.

I think that eye retina may added for recognition!

  15. It is dangerous to upload photograph for Aadhar as it will never require OTP for bank transaction and the hakkers may manage to use fake masks for any fraud. Is there any further security feature ?

  16. Photoraph taken at the time for reparation of Aadhar Card is already available with UIDAI then why again this online excercise. I mean to say in continuation of my previous comment that there is every eventuality or threat of hacking of any photograph and to know Aadhar number for commtting fraud by anti social elements.

  17. Sir,

Pl guide – As i want to change the name of the my daughter-in-laws name and address in AADHAR card on line.
and documents required for the same.

    Thanks,

    Shrikant

    • Name change can’t be done online. you have to go in person with the aadhar card and another id proof (like voter card, pan card, etc.) to the government aadhar kendra (in taluk office or municipality office).
I did for my wife in taluk office aadhar kendra.

  18. when a ration shop owner can break into the UIDAI portal and still the agency is still harping on its 100% security of the database. facial recog. also will not solve any purpose, rather, it will be another avenue for more breach as they will open another window. UIDAI and bjp govt. both are trying to enslave every citizen.

  19. In case of married women, the Aadhar Card should have provision for both name & surname before marriage and after marriage.

  20. Due to aging the impression of thumb not matching with the impression taken at the time of preparing adhar card. Thus pension disbursing official objecting and denying payment. What is the solution or meyhod yo get the impression corrected ?

    • Why Pension disbursing official objecting and denying payment for Not matching thumb or finger impression , when they are having Signatures Of Pensioners with them. Each PPO & Pension record has Pensioner’s Signature and Joint or Single photograph. Aadhar Linking is UNNECESSARY,I THINK. PENSIONERS ARE SR MOST CITIZENS and their Finger impressions are Not matching due to AGING. SELF ATTESTED LIFE CERTIFICATE MAY BE INTRODUCED TO AVOID HARRASMENT OF AGED PENSIONERS. THANKS.

  21. I don’t understand why UIDAI has removed the option to update almost all the informations from it’s website. Earlier it was very easy to update name correction, father’s name, date of birth, address and even photo online from your home on your own PC with internet through UIDAI’S website. Bt now Govt. has taken away this facility from us and has compelled us to face unnecessary harassment to run from this door to that door to update our AADHAR. Why?

  22. Why e-addhar website will stop working?
Why we don’t add our email, phone number… etc. Online in our addhar.
If govt want any type of fees we are able to pay it online.
Do something for it or waveup addhar compaction in all sectors…

  23. pan card name is subhas chandra kolay but aadhar subhas kolay and want to change phone number. what is the procedure
