According to the website of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number is a six-digit alphanumeric code made up of letters and numbers. At the time of hallmarking, each item of jewelery will be issued a HUID number and each item will be unique. At the assaying and hallmarking centre, the jewelery is hand stamped with a unique number.

Hallmarking fee is paid per item and not according to the weight of the item. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on March 4, 2022 said that hallmarking charges for gold jewelery and artefacts have been increased from Rs 35 to Rs 45 per item.
