Gold Jewelery Hallmarked Charges: Hallmarking is the precise determination and official recording of the proportional content of precious metal in precious metal objects. Thus hallmarks are official marks used in India as a guarantee of purity or fineness of precious metal articles.

Gold Jewelery Hallmarked Charges : The government has made it mandatory that all gold jewelery and antiques offered in the market will start having six-digit hallmarking from July 1, 2023. Once the jewelery is hallmarked, the hallmarked jewelery will be valid for life.

The third phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewelery and gold artefacts under the Hallmarking (Third Amendment) Order, 2023 has come into effect from September 8, 2023.

Consumers should download BIS Care App from Play Store. In this, they will be able to verify the authenticity and purity of the hallmarked gold jewelery purchased with HUID number by using ‘Verify HUID’.

What is hallmarking?

Hallmarking is the precise determination and official recording of the proportional content of precious metal in precious metal objects. Thus hallmarks are official marks used in India as a guarantee of purity or fineness of precious metal articles.

What is HUID number?

According to the website of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number is a six-digit alphanumeric code made up of letters and numbers. At the time of hallmarking, each item of jewelery will be issued a HUID number and each item will be unique. At the assaying and hallmarking centre, the jewelery is hand stamped with a unique number.

Hallmarked jewelery provides third party assurance and satisfaction that the customer gets the right purity of gold/silver for the given price (value for money).

How much will it cost to get hallmarked?

Hallmarking fee is paid per item and not according to the weight of the item. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on March 4, 2022 said that hallmarking charges for gold jewelery and artefacts have been increased from Rs 35 to Rs 45 per item.

Similarly, hallmarking charges for silver jewelery and artefacts have been increased to Rs 35, per item, from Rs 25. However, the minimum consignment fee for hallmarking of gold and silver jewellery/artefacts has not been increased.
