The government has taken a big step to crack down on fraud and spam calls. 1.77 crore fake mobile connections have been disconnected. These include about 34 lakh mobile connections used in cyber crime. Also, 11 lakh WhatsApp accounts and 71 thousand SIM agents have also been blocked. This has happened under the new telecom rules.

The government has disconnected crores of mobile connections to curb fraud and spam calls. These include connections that were taken through fake documents or any suspicious activity was seen on them. Apart from this, four telecom service providers (TSP) working with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have blocked 45 lakh fake international calls from reaching the Indian telecom network. Also, some WhatsApp accounts have also been affected.

1.77 crore mobile connections disconnected

New telecom rules have come into force across the country from October 1. The government has implemented these rules keeping in mind the convenience of the customers. Now, to curb fraud and spam calls, the government has taken another big decision and has shut down 1.77 crore mobile connections. These were taken with fake documents. They were being used in cyber crime. According to the ministry, among the disconnected mobile connections, 33.48 lakh were such that were used at some point of time to commit cyber crime. There are 77.61 lakh connections that were against the telecom rules applicable for keeping SIM. Not only this, the government has also launched a crackdown on those handsets that have been used in cyber crime or fraudulent activities.

WhatsApp accounts also hit

11 lakh bank accounts and payment wallets linked to disconnected mobile connections have been frozen. Along with this, about 11 lakh WhatsApp accounts have also been shut down. The ministry has also blocked 71 thousand points of sale i.e. SIM agents.
