  • The UIDAI will reject your request to link PAN with Aadhaar card if there is a mismatch of name, date of birth, gender
  • There are two ways to link PAN card with Aadhaar card under such circumstances

NEW DELHI : To make sure that your PAN card is not declared inoperative by the income tax department it is mandatory to link it with Aadhaar card within March 31 this year. The linking process is easy and can be done online in a few minutes. But not for those whose data in Aadhaar and PAN cards are not matching.

Thousands of such taxpayers whose demographic details like name, date of birth or gender in Aadhaar card and PAN card are not matching for various reasons are facing trouble linking the two identity documents.

After you submit the request to link PAN and Aadhaar, the income tax department fetches data from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to validate your demographic details against the Aadhaar card. For example if your name in Aadhaar and PAN are not exactly the same, the request will be rejected.

To weed out any chances of wrongful identity verification, the UIDAI has stopped partial matching of demographic details for Aadhaar authentication since December 2017.

In case your PAN-Aadhaar linking gets rejected due to data mismatch, then you can opt for biometric Aadhaar authentication. You need to download the Aadhaar seeding request form from NSDL portal and then visit your nearest PAN centre to complete the biometric Aadhaar authentication process offline. You can find your nearest PAN centre with biometric devices on the websites of NSDL or UTITSL.

The one-page simple form requires you to give both your PAN and Aadhaar numbers as well as names as per PAN card and Aadhaar card.

Alternatively, you can change the name or other demographic details in either Aadhaar or PAN database and then apply for linking of the two.

The finance ministry had recently informed the Parliament that out of the 48 crore PAN card holders in India, more than 17 crore are yet to link it with their Aadhaar cards till January. The government has also issued a notification declaring that all non-linked PAN cards will be treated as inoperative. It essentially means that such PAN cards will be treated as non-existent and violators will have to face consequences for not giving PAN wherever it is mandatory.

For all new PAN card applicants it is mandatory to quote Aadhaar number in their application form.
