Between April 21 and May 7, the rainy season in Delhi

The minimum temperature in Delhi on Wednesday was recorded at 20.9 degree Celsius and the maximum temperature was recorded at 36.7 degree Celsius, which is three notches below the normal season. The city experienced cloudy skies and sporadic rains between April 21 and May 7, which is a rarity during these months of the year. Historically, May is the hottest month in Delhi with an average maximum temperature of 39.5°C.

Officials attribute the reason for this to the Western Disturbances that came one after the other. Western Disturbances are weather systems that originate in the Mediterranean region and bring unseasonal rains to northwestern India.

Delhi’s temperature remained rare, did not last for many days

Srivastava said, ‘Three to four western disturbances have occurred in northwest India since April 21-22. During this, ‘Loo’ did not last a single day in Delhi. It is rare, but we cannot link it to climate change due to lack of data. A different color of the weather was seen in Delhi on Thursday morning. Normally, Delhi, which is in the grip of scorching hot winds these days, was seen wrapped in a light sheet of fog in the morning.

The minimum temperature was 15.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday and it was the third coldest morning in May since 1901 when meteorological data collection began.

50.8 mm of rain has been recorded so far in May

According to IMD data, the Safdarjung observatory has recorded 50.8 mm of rainfall so far in May, while Delhi normally receives 19.7 mm of rainfall in the entire month. The city recorded more than 20 mm of rainfall in April, which is the highest since 2017 in April. Due to prolonged rains, the maximum temperature during this period has been below normal.
