Poonam Madam, MP from Jamnagar, Gujarat, had asked the government a written question in Parliament about the people who filed income tax in the last five years, to which the Finance Ministry has replied.
The number of taxpayers has increased continuously in the last five years
According to the written reply given by the Finance Ministry on July 22, the number of people filing income tax returns has increased steadily in the last five years from FY 2019-20 to FY 2023-24. While 6.78 crore income tax returns were filed in FY 2019-20, it has increased to 8.61 crore by FY 2023-24.
In the financial year 2020-21, a total of 7.38 crore taxpayers had filed income tax returns. At the same time, there was a slight decline in the year 2021-22 and a total of 7.30 crore taxpayers had filed income tax returns. At the same time, in the financial year 2022-23, this figure has increased to 7.78 crores.
Due to these efforts of the government, the number of people filing income tax returns is increasing
MP Poonam Madam had also asked in her question that what steps has the government taken in the last few years through which the number of people filing tax returns in the country has increased. Responding to this, the Finance Ministry has informed that till now more than 12.24 crore taxpayers have registered themselves on the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department.
The Income Tax Department is running an email and SMS campaign to encourage people to file their income tax returns on time. Through this, an email and message is being sent to all eligible registered taxpayers so that they file their income tax returns on time. Apart from this, the government is also trying to spread awareness among the people through social media and advertisements.
File your income tax return before 31 July
The deadline for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2023-24 and assessment year 2024-25 is approaching. Less than 10 days are left for this work. In such a situation, to avoid last minute hassles, you should go to the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department and file for income tax return today itself. Otherwise, from August 1, you will have to pay a fine ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5000 for filing returns.
