Actually, if you are waiting for a train by taking a train ticket, then there is also a time limit for how long you can wait for a train. This time is different for night and day. However, if the train is late then it is possible to change this rule and time limit. If you do not follow this rule then heavy fine can be imposed.

What is the train waiting time on the platform

If your train is in the day then you can reach the station two hours before the time of the train. On the other hand, if your train is of night, then you can reach the platform 6 hours before and wait. During this time, you will not have to pay any kind of fine, but if you reach the platform before these times, then TTE can collect fine from you.

Platform ticket required

On the other hand, if you are going to spend more time on the platform than these time intervals, then you will have to take a platform ticket. After taking the platform ticket, you can spend time on the platform till that day. TTE cannot charge you fine for doing this, but if you fail to do so, fine can be charged from you.

Why was this rule made

This rule has been made by the Indian Railways to reduce the crowd of passengers on the platform. If a passenger deboards the train at night and instead of going home for security he can stay on the platform for 6 hours. On the other hand, for long distances, waiting for another train after getting down from one train can wait up to 2 hours a day.
