In the advisory issued earlier, the government had asked Aadhaar cardholders to give their Masked Aadhaar Card instead of a complete copy . On Sunday, the government decided to withdraw the advisory with immediate effect.

What is Masked Aadhar Card?

This option is offered by UIDAI to hide your Aadhaar number in your downloaded e-Aadhaar. In a masked Aadhaar card, the first 8 digits of the Aadhaar number are not visible. You’ll just see “xxxx-xxxx” in place of the first eight digits. Only the last 4 digits of the Aadhaar number are visible. The recipient of the masked Aadhar card will not have access to the full Aadhar number. Even if this masked Aadhaar is lost, it will still be safe.

All Aadhaar card holders are eligible to get a masked version of their ID. The masked card can be downloaded from the UIDAI website or cardholders can get it from any Aadhaar centre.

The government claims that the cardholder can use masked Aadhaar on the basis of any other ID. Users can also hide the date of birth on the card if the receiver does not need it or if the user wishes to do so.

How to Download Masked Aadhaar

Visit the official website of UIDAI (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in). -You will find the option ‘My Aadhaar’ in the tab -From the drop-down menu, select the ‘Download Aadhaar’ option -You will be asked to enter your 12 digit Aadhaar number or Virtual ID or Enrollment number – After that you just have to ‘ The ‘Masked Aadhaar’ option has to be selected. – Now you have to verify the captcha code – After this the user can hit on the ‘Send OTP’ option from the drop-down menu. -Once you enter the OTP from the registered phone, you can download the Masked Aadhaar.
