Let us tell you that pensioners will sit on a hunger strike in the national capital on Thursday for other demands, including the minimum pension of pensioners coming under the pension scheme EPS-95 of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). At present, a minimum monthly pension of Rs 1,000 has been fixed for pensioners under the Employees Pension Scheme (EPS). This system was implemented in September, 2014.

Will go on strike on 20th July

EPS-95 National Struggle Committee (NAC) has said in a statement on Wednesday that we will go on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar on Thursday, 20 July in support of our demands. According to the statement, the EPS-95 Rashtriya Sangharsh Samiti represents retired employees of industrial, public, co-operative, private sectors, who are known as EPS-95 pensioners. He had dedicated his service for the development of the nation but he is facing dire circumstances due to very low pension amount.

Pensioners are worried about low pension

NAC President Commander Ashok Raut (Retd) has said that these pensioners are living in distressed conditions due to meager pension and are losing their dignity in their family and society. According to the statement, that is why on July 20, the national president of the organization Ashok Raut and the members of the Central Executive Committee have announced a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. To garner further support, pensioners across the country will also go on hunger strike at prominent places on the same day.

Rs 7500 should be the minimum pension

The pensioners are demanding a monthly basic pension of Rs 7,500 along with dearness allowance, free health facilities to the pensioner’s spouse and a monthly pension of Rs 5,000 by including retired employees who do not come under the purview of EPS 95.

12 percent goes to provident fund

It is noteworthy that 12 percent of the basic salary of the employees coming under the Employees’ Pension Scheme, 95 goes to the provident fund. At the same time, out of 12 percent of the employer’s share, 8.33 percent goes to the employee pension scheme. Apart from this, the government also contributes 1.16 percent to the pension fund.

Many pension schemes implemented

Raut said, “Though the government has implemented several pension schemes for the welfare of the public, but the EPS employees are getting only a nominal pension amount after contributing to the pension fund during their entire service…” It has been said, “If the minimum pension is not increased in this monsoon session, the pensioners will hold a nationwide protest…”
