The new Telecommunication Act 2023 has come into force in India from today. With this, now a new rule has come into force that Indians will be able to buy only 9 SIM cards in their entire life.

Today, from 26 June 2024, the new ‘Telecommunication Act 2023’ has come into force across the country. With this, many big changes will be seen in the telecommunication sector in the coming days. Now Indians will be able to get a maximum of 9 SIM cards in their entire life.

Also, now getting a fake SIM card will attract 3 years of jail and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh. This new law also allows the government to take over, manage or suspend any telecom service or network for national security reasons.

With the implementation of the new telecommunication, now this rule has come into force that no citizen of India will be able to take more than 9 SIM cards. Also, people of Jammu Kashmir and North-East states will be able to take a maximum of 6 SIM cards. If users take more SIMs than this, then a fine of Rs 50,000 will be imposed on them for the first time and Rs 2 lakh for the second time. Also, taking a fake SIM will also attract a fine of Rs 50 lakh and/or a sentence of 3 years.

Under the new law, it has now been made mandatory that companies must first take consent before sending advertisements and promotional messages for goods and services. The law also states that the company providing telecom services must create an online mechanism where users can register their complaints online.

Let us tell you that this telecom bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 20 December 2023 and then by the Rajya Sabha on 21 December. Later it was converted into law with the signature of President Draupadi Murmu. For your information, let us also tell you that there are a total of 62 sections in this law, out of which only 39 sections are being implemented.

This new law will replace the 138-year-old Indian Telegraph Act which controls the telecom sector. Apart from this, this new law will also replace The Indian Wireless Telegraph Act 1933. It will also amend the TRAI Act 1997.
