New Sim Card Rules: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has given telecom operators an additional two months to comply with the new SIM card sales rules notified by the government in August. The new rules state that telecom companies will have to do proper KYC of SIM card vendors before registering them and including them in the system. Also, sale of bulk SIM cards has been banned. These rules were to come into effect from October 1, but will now come into effect from December 1.
A government official said that telecom companies sought additional time to implement these instructions as it required changes in their IT systems. In such a situation, the government has given a one-time extension on this basis.
A fine of Rs 10 lakh will be imposed
According to the new rules, if telecom companies allow any seller to sell SIM cards without registration after November 30, then a fine of Rs 10 lakh will be imposed on them.
According to government rules, all dealers are required to register by 30 November 2023. Regarding registration, a written agreement between the SIM card seller and the telecom companies is mandatory in the process.
Why did the government bring new rules?
New rules have been introduced by the government to prevent the menace of fake SIM cards and financial fraud. It was found that many vendors were issuing SIM cards without proper verification and were themselves indulging in such illegal activities. The government said that the work of vendors involved in illegal activities will be stopped and blacklisted for a period of three years.
Business Connections:
Currently there are 10 lakh SIM card sellers in the country. At the same time, it has been seen that people carry SIM cards in bulk and they have also been misused by companies, so the government has started a new system called Business Connections instead.
Let us tell you that till now the government has blacklisted about 70,000 dealers involved in fake SIM card activities and has registered 300 FIRs against those involved in cyber fraud.
