Pan Card Closed: A total of 11.5 crore PAN cards were deactivated due to not being linked to Aadhar card before the prescribed deadline, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBCT) said in response to the Right to Information (RTI). Were. The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar had ended earlier this year on June 30.

There are 70.24 crore PAN card holders in India and out of them, 57.25 crore have linked their PAN card with Aadhaar. The RTI reply further states that more than 12 crore PAN cards have not been linked to Aadhaar, out of which 11.5 crore cards have been deactivated. The RTI was filed by Madhya Pradesh-based activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur.

New PAN card holders get convenience

For new applicants of PAN card, Aadhaar-PAN linking is done automatically during the application stage. For existing PAN holders, who were allotted PAN on or before July 1, 2017, it is mandatory to link PAN and Aadhaar.

The RTI reply emphasized that under sub-section (2) of section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, it is mandatory for every person who has been allotted PAN as on July 1, 2017, to inform his Aadhaar number.

The RTI reply further said, ‘It was necessary to link PAN and Aadhaar on or before a notified date, failing which PAN becomes inoperative.’

How to Activate

Further, Section 234H provides that if a person, who is required to link his PAN with Aadhaar, fails to do so on or before a notified date, he shall be liable to pay the fee Will be responsible. CBDT has imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 for reactivating PAN card. So if you want to get PAN activated again, you will have to pay a fine of Rs 1000.
