In fact, after payment of Rs 1000, PAN can be re-activated in 30 days after reporting Aadhaar to the prescribed authority. As per Rule 114AAA of the Income Tax Rules, if a person’s PAN has become inoperative, they will not be able to furnish, intimate their PAN and will be liable for all consequences under the Act for such failure.

According to the CBDT circular in March 2023, PAN can be reactivated in 30 days after paying a fee of Rs 1000 on intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority. However, if your PAN has become inactive, you may have to face a lot of problems.
After PAN is deactivated—
- The person will not be able to file income tax return using an inoperative PAN.
Pending returns will not be processed. - Refunds pending on inoperative PAN cannot be issued.
- Pending proceedings in case of defective returns cannot be completed when the PAN becomes inoperative.
- Tax will be deducted at the higher rate if the PAN becomes inoperative.
