Ticket Cancellation Charges: There are multiple payment options while booking tickets including ‘buy now pay later’, credit card, debit card and UPI options. However, there is no Cash on Delivery (COD) option and hence all e-tickets are always prepaid. This also means that people who have to cancel their trip suddenly are naturally worried about their refund.

Ticket  Cancellation Charges:  Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is the sole source of ticket operations for Indian Railways. One can easily purchase e-ticket from https://www.irctc.co.in or use the IRCTC Rail Connect app available on both Play Store and App Store.

How much will be charged for cancellation of IRCTC e-ticket?

There are two categories under which IRCTC will start the process of refund for canceled e-tickets of Indian Railways. The first category is ‘before preparing the chart’ and the second category is ‘after preparing the chart’. For both categories, the refund will be processed by IRCTC after deducting charges (if any) within 5 to 7 working days depending on the mode of payment.

E-tickets sold through IRCTC website or app cannot be canceled offline, it has to be canceled online only.

IRCTC has written on its website, ‘The e-ticket can be canceled on the internet on this website till the train chart is prepared. Train tickets cannot be canceled by visiting railway counters.

Charts are prepared a few hours before the departure of the train. It is difficult to tell the exact time when the chart will be prepared for a particular train, so a rough estimate has to be made. After the chart is prepared, individuals get information from IRCTC through an SMS.

IRCTC said on its website, ‘Chart preparation for trains running till 12 noon is usually done the previous night.’ Keep in mind that the ticket cancellation process can be started either on the IRCTC website or app itself.

Cancellation charges for e-ticket before 48 hours Cancellation

charge is per passenger and is applicable only if the confirmed e-ticket is canceled more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train. Keep in mind that all these charges are flat rates.

Rs 240 for AC First Class/Executive Class

Rs 200 for AC 2 tier/first class

Rs 180 for AC 3 tier/AC chair car/AC 3 economy

Rs 120 for sleeper class

Rs 60 for second class

On cancellation of ticket after chart preparation?

IRCTC has said on its website, ‘E-ticket cannot be canceled after the chart is prepared. Users are requested to use online TDR filing for such cases and track the status of the refund case through the tracking service provided by IRCTC website and app.
