During the first half of 2024, 7.9 lakh complaints have been registered against unregistered telemarketers.
The effect of the strictness of telecom regulator TRAI regarding useless calls has started showing. Telecom companies have disconnected 2.75 lakh telephone connections making unwanted calls in about three weeks. Also, 50 units involved in such activities have been blacklisted. TRAI had issued strict guidelines on August 13 regarding unwanted calls.

The recent steps are expected to reduce unwanted calls and provide relief to consumers. TRAI has urged all stakeholders to contribute to a cleaner and more efficient telecom ecosystem. It has also said that unregistered telemarketers misusing these resources will have to face serious consequences.
To crack down on unwanted callers, TRAI had asked the telecom industry last week whether a higher tariff should be introduced for calls and SMS above a certain number. It was also asked to investigate customers making more than 50 calls or sending 50 SMS per day.
