In the year 2022 so far, there has been a significant increase in the use of smart cards for regular travel by the commuters of Delhi Metro. Before the spread of Kovid, where the use of smart cards was about 70 percent,

from January 2022 this figure has reached about 78%. It is noteworthy that in the year 2020, the use of smart cards in Delhi Metro was up to 100 percent for 3-4 months when metro services were restored in September 2020 after 169 days of continuous lockdown as a precautionary measure.

In the year 2002, Delhi Metro became the world’s first metro rail to issue tokens (contactless smart tokens) and smart cards (contactless smart cards) in place of paper tickets for travel. Earlier, smart cards were bought by foreign vendors, but now it is manufactured completely in India under the self-reliant India mission, an important initiative of the Government of India. At present, around 25 million Metro smart cards are in use.

On an average 10-12 thousand metro smart cards are sold every day from metro stations. DMRC has also provided separate dedicated exit gates at most of the metro stations for customers using only smart cards. Also, 10 percent discount is given on each journey and an additional 10 percent discount is given on entering the metro station during off-peak hours.

Smart Card Recharge also New Facility

DMRC has recently started several new initiatives to recharge/top up Smart Cards to save time and queue for passengers at stations. The options include recharge/top up from TVM (Ticket Vending Machine), issuance of Metro Combo Card by various banks, credit/debit card transaction facility at the station, net banking using dmrcsmartcard.com and mobile wallet etc.

Metro is also offering these two special smart cards.

In addition, Delhi Metro 1-Day Tourist Card of Rs.200 (Rs.50- refundable security deposit) for unlimited travel in one day and Rs.500- Rs.3 for 3 days unlimited travel. Day Tourist Card (Rs 50- Refundable Security Deposit) is also being made available for the passengers.

Let us inform that DMRC intends to increase this figure like other metro systems like Singapore and Hong Kong Metro where almost 100% of Metro commuters are availing daily smooth and enjoyable travel through Metro Card.
